Crown Football Round-Up

After a night to remember against future Premiership champions, where Christian Walton became the first goalkeeper this season to keep a clean sheet while being on the winning side against Manchester City, Walton features in the League One team of the week. Wigan followed up with a 1-0 win against Rochdale, keeping their promotion dreams alive! Blackburn Rovers are 6 points ahead at the top of the table, however thanks to the Latic’s FA Cup journey, they have 4 games in hand over their rivals. You can watch Wigan play Blackburn Rovers on Sunday at midday, live on Sky Sports!

Two early goals ensured Blackburn Rovers' Development Squad progressed to the last 16 stage of the Premier League Cup after a comfortable win at Cardiff City. Two strikes inside the opening 10 minutes from Tyler Magloire and Lewis Mansell put Rovers in command in south Wales. And Joe Nuttall put the cherry on top of the cake by bagging Rovers' third and his 19th of the season in all competitions. However it was Magloire who caught everyone’s attention with the centre half scoring after just six minutes into the encounter, with a stunning volley! Rovers also top the Premier League 2, Division 2 table and look sure to get promoted come the end of the season. Best of luck to Tyler for your next key games in the league and cup.

A stirring comeback from Leicester City's Development Squad saw them finish as 2-1 victors over Everton in the Premier League Cup on Monday, which included Alex Pascanu starting his first game in two months after being side-lined with an injury.

It took until the 24th minute for either side to challenge the opposition goalkeeper but City eventually started to pose more of a threat. Josh Eppiah’s low drive, from 18 yards, led to a last-ditch intervention. Antony Evans, who was captaining the Everton side on a bitterly cold night in the East Midlands, had the next real chance for either side with a free-kick on the edge of the area that Grant had won but he could not keep his strike down.

On the 70th minute Baxter laid the ball off for Denny to smash a snapshot into the bottom corner and gave the Toffees the lead. However, two goals in the final five minutes condemned Everton Under-23s to a 2-1 defeat in their final Group F Premier League Cup clash at Holmes Park. Leicester levelled on 84 minutes before netting the winner from the spot moments later after Antony Evans was penalised for handball in the area and the kick from the spot was converted to seal Leicester the win! Leicester face Liverpool in the next Premier League 2 game - with both teams level on points at the top of the league.

Liverpool U23s saw their Premier League International Cup hopes ended in heart-breaking fashion as an injury-time goal consigned them to a 2-1 quarter-final defeat at the hands of Porto.

When the opening goal finally did come, it was courtesy of a marvellous team move.

Adam Lewis, restored to midfield having played so much of the season at left-back, underlined the wisdom of that decision with a brilliant turn and through-pass for Millar, whose cut-back gave Virtue time and space to poke the ball in.

Lewis came within inches of carving out a two-goal lead when his free-kick rattled the post, while Virtue was unable to turn the rebound home.

But the hosts' resistance was eventually broken 20 minutes into the half as a lightning-fast one-two allowed Costa to burst into the box before slamming a finish in the roof of the net.

Unfortunately for the hosts, despite having a flurry of chances towards to closing stages of the game, it wouldn't prove to be enough to send the game to extra time, and there was little Ward could do when Joao Cardoso found acres of space in the final minute of injury time to nod in.
