Crown Football Weekly Round-Up
In international news, both Stephy Mavididi and Corey Whelan earned U20s caps for their respective teams during the break. Stephy featured in a three lions U20 shirt in their game against Germany U20 and Corey played for Republic of Ireland U20, during their visit to Norway.
Jak McCourt has scored three goals, in as many games in League Two, with the first coming against Swindon in a 2-2 draw and then twice for Chesterfield as they beat 10-man Forest Green 3-2! Against Swindon, Jak turned the game on it’s head with a beautiful narrow 30 yard strike, going in off the underside of the crossbar. In their game against Forest Green, Rovers were reduced to 10 men in the 49th minute when Emmanuel Monthe was shown a straight red card. McCourt forced Brad Collins into one of many decent saves ahead of his 22nd minute goal and the keeper’s legs also denied Dennis, whilst McCourt fired wide from range. Rovers managed just a single shot in the opening half, Reece Brown forcing a save. At the break, Forest Green made changes but Monthe was dismissed for a lunge on Joe Rowley and McCourt made the one-man advantage pay when he scored his second goal five minutes later, earning him the ‘Man of the Match’ award. The long awaited return for Christian Walton finally came, when he featured in Brighton & Hove Albion U23’s game against Stoke City u23 in the Premier League 2 fixture. It was Stoke who looked like the team who would walk away with the points after an early goal from Hill on 3 minutes, and then Crown’s Tre Pemberton doubled City’s advantage after capitalising on a misplaced pass on the edge of the box, on the 63rd minute. However, the Seagulls fought back and scored 3 goals in 6 minutes, with the score finishing 3-2! Liverpool U23s extended their lead at the top of Premier League 2 and earned local bragging rights as they claimed a 4-0 victory over Everton on Saturday evening. Goals in quick succession from Herbie Kane and Corey Whelan put Neil Critchley’s team in charge midway through the first half at Prenton Park. Corey looks his chance well when an in-swinging cross came in and he made no mistake in nodding in. Congrats to both Corey and Lloyd Jones, for another solid pairing at the back for the Reds, with the result keeping them top of the Premier League 2 table ahead of Everton by 5 points. Liverpool U19s secured their place in the last 16 of the UEFA Youth League with a commanding 4-0 victory over Sevilla on Tuesday. Steven Gerrard’s side went into the match in Spain knowing that three points would seal top spot in Group E with a game to spare. If there was an element of fortune involved in Liverpool’s second goal, their third was all about the quality of Adam Lewis and Brewster. Lewis played in a wicked out-swinging cross from the left and, just as he did in the U23s’ 4-0 mini-derby win at the weekend, Brewster connected sweetly to send a controlled low volley into the net.
