Crown Football Round-Up

It’s been a busy week in Crown Football, with goals and awards!

Before the Barnsley vs Burton Albion game kicked off, Ryan Kent was presented with an award for the ‘Young Player of the Season’! Ryan has been a fan favourite for the Tykes, showcasing his excellent flair and dribbling abilities, as well as creating and scoring for the club. Congratulations Ryan!

The game finished 1-1 and it was substitute Luke Varney who scored his first goal for Burton Albion to help confirm their Championship status with a nervy draw at Barnsley. A poor Burton clearance allowed George Moncur to drill home the opener. Brewers keeper Stephen Bywater made a string of saves before Varney met a Lasse Vigen Christensen corner to head home with his first touch. Varney, a January arrival from Ipswich Town, made an immediate impact, scoring Burton’s first-ever goal against the Tykes as he nodded beyond Adam Davies to equalise from a corner. The forward continued to threaten as he twice tested Davies, while Kyle McFadzean went close to scoring an own goal when he sliced an attempted clearance from a Moncur cross narrowly wide of Bywater’s right-hand post. Brayford’s intervention late on earned Burton the point they needed to be certain of remaining in the division for a second season, while the draw leaves the Tykes winless in nine games at Oakwell.

Ryan Edwards was the main winner at the Shrimps Player of the Year awards evening. Edwards won the coveted ‘Players’ Player of the Year’ award and the ‘Supporters Player of the Year’ awards after a fine season. Ryan, who has had an impressive season at the heart of the Shrimps’ defence, said: “It is great to win the awards. To be held in such high esteem by supporters is great but the players’ player of the year award is one that every professional footballer likes to get because it shows he has the backing of his team mates.’’ Looking back at the season overall he said: “I really feel that I have developed as a player this year. Last year I made too many mistakes and often tried to play my way out of trouble and lost the ball in bad areas. This year though, I’ve put my foot through the ball more often and cleared my lines and although it isn’t always pretty it has been far more effective. I’m still only young for a central defender and I’m learning all the time and I just want to keep on improving.’’

On-loan Everton striker, Calum Dyson, was voted the ‘Supporter’s Young Player of the Season’ at Grimsby Town on Tuesday evening! Congratulations to Calum who has provided 4 goals since joining in the January transfer window.

As League One has come to an end, it’s crunch time in League two and the Championship, as they play their last games of the season.
