Amit Patel is a Doctor, author, disability rights campaigner, motivational speaker and independent diversity, inclusion and accessibility consultant. He is an incredible example of the power of positive thought. He is someone who has thrived despite adversity.

Amit’s first book – Kika & Me was published in February 2020 to rave reviews. The incredible story chronicles the relationship between Amit and his guide dog Kika.

As a child Amit was extremely bright and passionate about helping people, so it was no surprise to his family when he went to Cambridge to study medicine.  Being a trauma Dr it took him all over the world helping deal with huge national crises.

Amit’s own world was turned upside down when he was diagnosed with keratoconus. One night he was a newlywed eating a typical dinner with his wife, the next day he was completely blind. It was a terrifying period of his life and, after being assaulted on one of his first trips out of the house, he didn’t leave the house for 3 months. But bit by bit he re-learnt all the skills he needed to be independent – before using those skills to teach others who had lost their sight. He did this with the support of his wife – but there was another very important relationship on the horizon which would change his life forever. In 2015 Amit was matched to Kika, his guide dog.

Kika gave him a renewed lease of life and a best friend to boot! After becoming more independent with Kika a video of them being abused by a commuter on the underground went viral. Amit decided that he would attach a go-pro camera to Kika so he could give the world a dog’s eye view of the challenges and discrimination that faces disabled people every day. Now Kika has 25,000 followers on social media, who follow Amit and Kika as they travel together through London and its surrounds on a daily basis, charting their journeys, challenges and the people they meet on their travels.

An incredibly positive and active campaigner for accessibility, Amit has appeared on numerous online and print media in the UK and globally. He has featured on BBC News, ITV News, Channel 4 News, Channel 5 News and Sky Sunrise. He is a regular contributor to the BBC Asian Network, BBC Radio 4, BBC 5 Live and BBC London Radio.

Amit is a total thrill seeker with an incredibly infectious and up-beat personality. He has worked with some amazing brand campaigns. Amit reached out to Toyota in 2018 requesting them to “Help me drive again”. He took on the Star In A Reasonably Priced Car challenge - Where he drove the 5th ever fastest time around the track! And he’s always looking for his next impressive and exciting project to challenge him (and Kika!).

Amit has also proved to be an inspirational public speaker, addressing staff and business conferences for a large number of leading blue chip businesses. Such as American Express, Legal & General Investment Management (LGIM), The Eden Project, AXA, BCLP Law Firm, MUFG, NHS, The Small Awards, Smart Energy GB and Purple Beach.
